I make hard boiled eggs one of two ways.
A - put eggs into a pot of cold water. Bring to a rapid boil and remove from heat. Cover and let stand 10 minutes. Place into cold water.
B - bring a pot of water to a rolling boil, carefully place eggs into water (I use a ladle). Boil for 12 minutes and place eggs directly into cold water.
To make dye:
Bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add 4 tablespoons of vinegar. Pour 1/2 a cup of vinegar and water into 4 separate cups. Add 10 drops of food coloring to each cup. Dip eggs for 3-5 minutes each, longer for deeper color.
To get a marbled effect - put 1 tablespoon of olive oil to each cup. Dip eggs in each cup and wipe with a cloth when you remove them. You can then dip them into a different color if you want.
You can use a white crayon to draw pictures or names onto the eggs before dying if you want. Or even use stickers on the eggs and remove them after you dye to get pretty decorations.
